Making money as a college student - why money is tight

Many college students are regularly pretty short on cash. And that's not only down to the regular tuition they have to pay for the university. Many young people leave their parents' home for the first time during this phase of life and move into an apartment of their own or a shared one. With parental support or student aid such as BAföG in Germany, which they later have to partly pay back, there isn't much money left to live on without worry. Regular saving and necessary cutbacks are the order of the day. There are, however, plenty of options for students to earn a bit of extra money alongside their studies.

Making money as a college student - the options are varied

Regular lectures usually follow a coordinated schedule.
Even so, there is still enough time left to take a part-time job or a small side job and earn a little extra that way. For example in the evenings, on weekends or during semester breaks.
Typical jobs for students are waiting tables, bartending, stocking shelves, delivering newspapers or cleaning work. But there are many other fields in which they can work.
If you can't or don't want to hold a regular job because of time, you can also get some money in other ways.

Many students offer their help with moves, for example. There they earn about $15 an hour for lending a hand with carrying and setting up. If this help is called on often, it can add up to quite a bit.
There are special provider websites where students can register as moving helpers.

Students can also earn some money on the side as babysitters, grocery shoppers or snow shovelers. A good option for this would be signing up on an online community for services with a corresponding listing. Offering to walk dogs can also become a regular source of income. Making money as a college student can also be done by tutoring school kids.

Lending a hand to elderly people can also be worthwhile for students. Very many seniors can no longer look after themselves and depend on regular help from outside. For example, groceries could be bought, the home cleaned or the lawn mowed in between. Satisfied elderly people are usually very grateful and accordingly often generous toward young, hard-working people.

If you have a knack for hospitality, you can also try your hand at a restaurant or a pub in your free evenings, serving a little and pouring drinks. Regular tips would certainly come in handy here, when it comes to coping with the costly everyday life of a student.
That kind of work generally falls into the category of a minijob and should be registered. Otherwise there could be problems with working off the books. And that really wouldn't be worth it.
